About 25 miles cast of Chichen Itza on Highway 180 en route to Puerto Juarez is the town of Valladolid, one of Yucatan's larger cities. An attractive park surrounds a large cenote near the center of town, and a good restaurant is located on its rim. At one time the city's water supply was taken from this cenote. It is a couple of blocks to the left of the main highway on a paved street.
An unusual event takes place in Valladolid during the latter part of January. Known as Las Candelarias, the festival is unique for its display of regional folk dances and colorful parades.
If you're driving to Puerto Juarez, be sure to fill up with gas and buy any necessary supplies; Valladolid is the last town before you reach the coast where you can be sure of finding them.
