Torreon, in the state of Coahuila, is part of a large metropolitan area that includes the contiguous cities of Gomez Palacio and Ciudad Lerdo, both in Durango. Established in 1887 as a railway town, Torreft continues to be a center for transport, as well as for mining, smelting and other industries. Some of the surrounding land has been irrigated for wheat and cotton. The whole district is known as La Laguna. The 1910 battle for Torreon was Pancho Villa's first big victory in the Mexican Revolution, giving him control of the railways that radiate from the city. Villa waged three more battles for Torreon over the next few years, during which his troops in their revolutionary zeal slaughtered some 200 Chinese immigrants.
