Nestled in the center of the green Valley of Toluca is the bustling commercial city of Toluca. The invigorating, brisk weather typical of this flat valley is an inevitable result of its high altitude of almost 9,000 feet. Nevado de Toluca, an extinct, sometimes snow shrouded volcano, towers over the city. Within its walls, the crater of the 15,000 foot volcano ensconces two lakes filled with rainbow trout for the warm blooded angler. Views are spectacular on the road into the volcano's crater.
Most visitors spend hours at the market in Toluca. The old market downtown is no longer; the new modern market, opened in 1973 south of the city just off the peripheral highway, is open every day. Friday is the day when merchandise floods the adjoining plaza. The popular arts section is installed in one of the permanent buildings.
Also worth a visit are the Museum of Popular Arts on Highway 15 at the eastern entrance to 'Toluca, and the Museum of Carreria (horsemanship) downtown. Archeological pieces from the 'Toluca area and the entire state of Mexico now reside at the Museum of Teotenango, 11 miles south of Toluca on Highway 55.
