Santa Rosalia northern port for Cortez ferries Baja California Mexico
Curiosity is the best reason for visiting bustling Santa Rosalia, long famous but no longer functioning as a French owned, French operated, French speaking copper mining town. The town is Mexican now, though some French names and customs persist. View the prefabricated metal church designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (of tower fame) for a Paris exposition; it ended up here around the turn of the century.
A ferry accommodating up to 500 passengers and 120 cars operates between Santa Rosalia and Guaymas on the mainland. Private planes and a "commuter" plane service from the mainland come and go on an airstrip 1 mile south of town.
