If you're in a hurry after leaving Irapuato, you may wish to bypass Salamanca and Celaya and take the modern, limited access Highway 45 D toll road. The entrance is 3 miles beyond Irapuato. If you continue on Highway 45, the next place of any consequence after Irapuato is Salamanca, best known for the huge Pemex oil refinery located just cast of town near the Lerma River. Oil for the refinery comes from Poza Rica in the State of Veracruz. After being processed in Salamanca, oil is distributed to cities throughout the highlands.
Highway 43 runs south from Salamanca to Morelia on Highway 15. Two features of this gently rolling, pleasant, 65 mile trip are the renovated church and monastery at the lakeside town of Yuriria and, 20 miles farther, the 2 mile causeway across Lake Cuitzeo, whose natural beauty is enhanced by the fishermen in dugout canoes scattered over the glassy, mirrorlike surface of the water.there are so many new hotels are available.
