Queretaro's museums, monuments and colonial architecture are less spectacular than those of Guanajuato or Zacatecas, but it's a lively city. It's prettiest at night when many of its handsome buildings are floodlit, and wandering the streets and plazas is a real pleasure. It especially warrants a visit if you're interested in Mexico's history, in which it has played an important role. In 1996 the city officially took back its old name, Santiago de Queretaro, but it's generally known as just Queretaro.
