The largest town between Monterrey and Ciudad Victoria, Linares is the center of an extensive farming, ranching, and citrus growing area. Linares was founded in 1712 as the Bishopric of San Felipe de Linares. Two churches, the Church of Senor de la Misercordia and the Parochial Church, both face their own plaza.
At Linares, Highway 60 takes off to the west. After winding through scenic Santa Rosa Canyon, it climbs up and over the majestic Sierra Madre to a junction with Highway 57 about midway between Saltillo and Matehuala, A popular short cut route for motorists from southern Texas gateways, the highway enables you to reach Highway 57 without going through the metropolitan cities of Monterrey and Saltillo.
The country becomes more tropical south of Linares; towering mountains are omnipresent on the right side of the horizon.
