The services of a jeep and guide may be secured at Kabah to visit the three lesser known Maya sites of Labna, Xlabpak, and Sayil. The all day trip takes you over rough road into the towering bush of Yucatan it certainly cannot be called jungle and is too tangled to be described as a forest to these remarkable, tantalizing cities that have barely been explored. Unfortunately there simply are not sufficient funds available to restore all of Mexico's archaeological sites. Highlights include the monumental arch of Labna that once connected two groups of buildings now in ruins; the Temple of Chac in Xlabpak, a restrained design treatment of Chac's notable feature his long nose; and the elegant Palace of Sayil whose three stories show an extraordinary lack of unity and the use (rare in Maya land) on the second level of columns with square capitals.
