Fifteen miles north and west of Celaya nestles the unassuming town of Juventino Rosas, formerly Santa Cruz but renamed in honor of one of Mexico's most famous composers who was born here in 1868. Rosas wrote the beautiful waltz, "Sobre las Olas"(Over the Waves), which we know in English as "The Loveliest Night of the Year." He received only a few pesos for his composition, and though he wrote many other pieces, none achieved the fame of "The Loveliest Night." He died in poverty at the age of 26 in a Cuban fishing village.
