West of the university stadium are the Jardines del Pedregal, "Gardens of the Lava Flow" an extension of the same flow upon which the campus is built. To reach this incredible residential area, return north on Insurgentes Sur to San Jeronimo, taking off to the left just beyond Avenida Universidad.
The Pedregal must be seen to be believed. Its modernistic architecture incorporates black lava stone into homes and landscaping with dramatic results. The weird, beautiful trees and flowers that flourish on their rocky beds complete the otherworldly atmosphere.
Here there are no pre Hispanic or colonial monuments; only the uncommon beauty that sprang from the fertile imagination of a group of architects in the late 1940s.
