The Borda Gardens were once the epitome of the town's elegance and tropical atmosphere. At the gardens you'll find a grand old mansion, a mirror pool, fountains, and the exotic but sadly neglected gardens. The mansion, once the summer home of Maximilian and Carlotta (1864 1867) now houses an arts and crafts shop, an art gallery, a small museum, and a restaurant.
During your stay be sure to visit the medieval palace fortress known as the Cortez Palace on the main plaza. The building was constructed by Hernando Cortez in 1526 after the Spaniards occupied the town. Restored by the National Institute of Anthropology and History, the palace contains a museum, and a mural by Diego Rivera.
The Cathedral of Cuernavaca has a beautifully restored, modern interior; the exterior reflects the bold architectural style of the palace. During colonial years, missionaries used the cathedral (then a monastery) as a departure point for their missionary work in Asia. For a special treat, attend the Mass on Sunday and absorb the unique, spinetingling experience of hearing inspirational music played by a mariachi band.
