If you entertain the notion of "doing" Chapultepec Park in a day, forget it! This vast cultural and recreational center covers more than 2,000 acres. It is bounded by Avenida Constituyentes on the southsouthwest, extends westward in an irregular form beyond Molino del Rey Street and the peripheral highway, and in some places overflows Pasco de la Reforma on the north. On the east, the park relinquished a portion of its land for construction of the Melchor Ocampo section of the inner city expressway.
Located within the park's boundaries are four of the country's finest museums, three lakes with boating facilities, a variety of playground equipment, a Coney Island type amusement park with all the usual rides plus one of the largest roller coasters to be found anywhere, and several miniature railways. There are also flower gardens, a number of handsome fountains and sculptures, and miles of quiet walkways shaded by centuriesold cypress trees (ahuehuetes). The park is closed to auto traffic on Sunday.
