Traditionally the destination for Sunday outings by Guadalajarans, Chapala has a large community of retired and foreign residents and was popular with the international set long before any of the other lakeshore resort villages. Two private clubs extend their privileges to visitors: one features a golf course, the other is a yacht club. Chapala has several restaurants, most serving the one food item that everyone who comes to Chapala should sample Lake Chapala whitefish. For quite some time, the pollution of the lake made the consumption of whitefish unwise. The situation has apparently improved, though, and residents and visitors are once again enjoying the regional specialty.
If you continue eastward along the north shore of the lake, you go through the lakeside towns of Ocotlan and La Barca. At La Barca you cross the Lerma River just before it flows into the lake. Then the highway cuts down to Sahuayo and joins Highway 15, or you can continue ahead and join Highway 15 at Zamora, a strawberry town.
