Celaya is probably most famous as the home town of Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras architect, artist, and poet, often called the "Michelangelo of Mexico." El Carmen Church of Celaya is considered to be his greatest architectural work. Tresguerras is buried in a little chapel of his own design in Celaya's ancient San Francisco Church, the newer altars of which he also designed.
Celaya is also famous as the source of a favorite sweet, cajeta, made of goat's milk boiled down with sugar to a thick, gooey syrup. You'll note many cajeta shops along Lopez Matcos Boulevard that cuts through town.
