Highway 40 runs east from Saltillo to Monterrey on a fine divided expressway (eliminating many of the wicked curves that formerly marked this welltraveled route), and west from Saltillo to Torreon through large expanses of desert. About midway between Saltillo and Torreon, a few miles south of an oasis junction called Paila, is the wine-making town of Parras de la Fuente. Nearby is the popular resort named Rincon del Montero, fed by springs that give this small area a verdant appearance in
marked contrast to the desolate countryside around it.
Southwest of Saltillo, Highway 54 heads for the desert past the old mining town of Concepcion del Oro to Zacatecas, beyond which you can continue to Guadalajara. Just southwest of Saltillo, along Highway 54, is the almost forgotten site of one of the confrontations of the U.S.Mexican War-the Battle of Buena Vista. (The Mexicans call it the Battle of Angostura-the name of a village nearby.) The battleground where the clash between Mexico and the United States occurred is 10 minutes from Saltillo. A small, weather-beaten shaft marks the rocky spot on which the battle took place on February 23, 1847.
