For decades Playa was a simple fishing village that foreigners passed through on their way to a ferry that would take them to Cozumel. But with the construction of Canctim, the number of travelers roaming this part of Yucatan exploded, as did the number of hotels and restaurants built to serve them. Playa has overtaken Cozumel as the area's preferred resort town; its beaches are better and nightlife groovier than Cozumel's, and the reef diving is just as good. Most of the town's accommodations are stylish European owned and managed inns, and several of its restaurants serve delicious French and Italian cuisine.
What's to do in Playa? Hang out. Swim. Dive. Shop. Eat. Drink. Stroll the beach. Get some sun. Listen to beach bands, Dance in clubs. In the evening, Playa's pedestrian mall, on Avenida Quinta, is a popular place to stroll or have a meal or a drink.
